‘Grumpy Gramps’ comes from having been around the walks of life now for a good long time and since my grandkids once in a while say ‘oh, oh, Gramps/Papa is grumpy’ – well it just seemed to be fitting to call these spouts of ‘getting something off my chest’ as coming from ‘Grumpy Gramps’.

Living near the heart of the United States also means I live in an area that is well known for having very long stretches of hot and very dry weather this time of the year.  So this year seems just a bit odd as we have now had not one but several stretches where it has rained several days in a row, enough rain for the grass to grow like a pasture of dandelions.

Now I am not complaining about the rain, although if I had known it was going to rain this much through June and into the first few days of July, I would have bought some decorative rocks and a few fish for what appears to be a long term pond that has formed in my backyard.

A good thing about the rain – we have plenty of water for the two trees put in since the middle of November as well as a trio of new rose bushes, a quartet of boxwoods, twin dwarf Colorado spruce trees and about five Arbor Day Foundation ‘twigs’ that are surviving and growing thanx to a minimal donation we gave to them.

So to be an optimist the rain is awesome because it saves on my watering bill, keeps my grass moist and green while watering all my growing trees, plus it keeps our bird bath full and the neighborhood birds do seem to appreciate that.

On the other side of having so much rain is the rain is also keeping my backyard in a steady mode of being a pond instead of just a grassy yard and my fear with that is that it will kill or damage my grass which we have been working diligently at to get to grow and stay green after the previous owners of this property didn’t seem to have taken very good care of it for several years.

Then we check in on the human toll of this kind of weather and since this ‘Gramps’ has health issues with his lungs (late Stage III COPD), all the moisture is making it difficult many days to be outside for any length of time before my lungs say that is enough, I am tired of this humidity and heat and I can’t operate properly.  So it does mean I have to be much more diligent in how, when and where I go outside the confines of a home with a solid air conditioning system and de-humidifier.

With an overall look at the current status of ‘rain, rain & more rain’ I will choose to look at the positives of the rain watering my yard, plants and trees over the fact that my yard is not usable for anything but a bird bath.  So if it chooses to rain some more, which it is beginning to do as I write this, then bring it on because we do live in the middle of the country where everyone knows that within the next month or so we will be begging for some natural rains and the temperatures will be consistently hovering around that nasty three-digit mark of 100 for days, if not weeks at a time.

So for today ‘Grumpy Gramps’ says “let it rain, let it rain, let it rain”.

There you have it, another ‘Grumpy Gramps’ and while many may be spewing about things they don’t like or see has being wrong – many times it will be just ‘getting it off my chest’ type of sharing.  So enjoy, think about it and if you feel the need or want – send me a comment or two and ‘Grumpy Gramps’ promises to get back to you.
